An important message from Dan Baker added 08/05/08

Many of you are aware of the recent proposals regarding alternative licensure and the program approval process as well as the teacher education report card initiative; all stemming from the State Board of Education. The ideas contained in these initiatives are of great concern to TACTE and have attracted the attention of AACTE, the NEA and TEA to the extent that educators representing AACTE and TEA are scheduled to express their concerns at a meeting on August 22 prior to the first reading of the proposals in September.

As the Executive Committee designed and revised the agenda for the fall conference we extended an invitation to David Sevier who is the SBE point-man on these items to be included in our program on Saturday morning, and he accepted. His presentation will be followed by reactions from a panel of educators representing TACTE, TEA and Dr. Valerie Rutledge, the higher education representative on the SBE who is ending her term. There will also be an opportunity for Q & A.

These issues will directly affect the quality of teacher education in Tennessee. It is important for the architects of the Board’s proposals to hear the panel reactions as well as those of TACTE members. The Executive Committee strongly encourages you to be present on Saturday morning and to let your concerns be heard.

The SBE proposals that have elicited such strong reactions may be found here:

The TACTE Spring Conference will be held Friday and Saturday, March 20 and 21, with the TAILACTE meeting on Thursday, March 19.
